EPI LASIK

Blade Free AND No-Cut LASER Eye Surgery in India

Shroff Eye is pleased to introduce an exciting option for eliminating your numbers through laser vision correction. It combines the advantages of other laser techniques and at the same time does away with some of their disadvantages.

We offer LASIK which is Bladefree and also No-Cut on your eye which is called EpiLASIK (is a safe, effective and permanent procedure).

This can also be considered by patients who have:

  • Dry Eyes
  • Thin Cornea
  • Wish to join the Army, Navy and Airline industry where LASIK is not allowed
  • Those who fear a ‘cut’ on their eye.

What is most important when considering treating powers is the laser actually treating the powers and which we use is the most advanced being the Concerto 500 Hz system.

A Femtosecond laser DOES NOT treat your powers or numbers. It is only used in a pre step towards the LASIK procedure using a laser to 'cut' the cornea and create a flap. 'Intralase' or what is marketed as i LASIK is not advised by us currently for various reasons. This is not a recent or new treatment but has been around since 2004. This gave rise to many issues which is why it did not gain popularity with doctors. Read Intralase Opinions from Experts.

Intralase still makes a 'cut' on the eye
although uses a laser to do so. The true bladefree or No - Cut LASIK is EpiLASIK which we do offer.

You could first run through our Epi - LASIK FAQ's link as many of your doubts may get cleared from there.

We only perform Custom or wavefront LASIK procedures

Basically treating your numbers has two steps:

Step 1 to create a 'flap' to make this procedure painless and heal well. That is its only objective.

Flap creation requires the skill of the surgeon as well as the use of a good equipment to be free from flap related complications. If Centers face Flap related complications due to reasons like multiple users (doctors), new inexperienced surgeons or using poor equipment creating flaps then to reduce these complications one looks at using a femtosecond laser which uses a laser beam to make the flap. So, a femtosecond laser does not treat your numbers, it only creates the flap.

However, this itself is not free from its own set of issues. The frequency and other profiles with which a femtosecond laser is working currently is under an upgrade programme since it is resulting in its own complications, hence until then, we are not in favour of the same.

Further, the cost of this femtosecond laser used just to create the flap is passed on to the patient which is an extremely high fee.

Most users of a femtosecond laser are using the VISIX laser to treat the numbers (Step 2 of LASIK). The VISIX laser, is a far older machine working at a speed of just 60 Hertz compared to the advanced systems today working at 500 Hz (such as ours). However, it is sold together as a unit as it is made by the same company.

Hence till a femtosecond laser is more well established, we work best with the Moria M2 microkeratome to create the flap and the Concerto 500 Hz laser system with complete disposable kits.

Step 2 to treat the numbers completely, accurately with safety

Your concern is treating your eye numbers ACCURATELY WITH SAFETY. The numbers are treated by another laser technology (other than the femtosecond laser), and if this old, then you will not have the desired outcome. VISIX or Zyoptix usually used with Intralase and has only been upgraded to customized wavefront treatments, not built from scratch for wavefront principles as our laser, the Concerto 500 Hz.

It is very important for one to focus more about the laser technology being used to treat your numbers rather than the pre steps of using the blade or bladeless, unless the Center is having some complications in these pre steps, for which one would try to reduce the same by the bladeless method.

Epi-LASIK is a safe, effective and permanent procedure.

You can expect making a safe LASIK procedure even safer.

A unique blade-less instrument called the epikeratome separates the epithelium to make a flap.

Advantages of Epi-LASIK

A better option for those with dry eye problems. A better option than LASIK for those with thin corneas. Many patients who have thin corneas are now candidates for laser vision correction.

Epi-LASIK provides a more predictable outcome after wavefront-guided laser treatments according to studies. Epi LASIK is an option for those who do not want any marks on the cornea.

Recovery when compared to LASIK

However, the visual recovery [time for office attendance], perhaps 3-4 days, is not as rapid as LASIK [2 days]. The minimal discomfort can last for 24 to 36 hours compared to 6 hours for LASIK.

Procedure day expectations:

You will arrive at the laser centre about half an hour prior to your procedure. The area around your eyes will be cleaned and a sterile drape is applied around them. Anaesthetic eye drops will be used to numb your eyes; no injection, pad or stitch is used. When your eye is completely numb, a soft clip will gently keep the eyelids open.

During the procedure you may feel a little pressure, but no pain. You will be asked to look directly at a target light during the laser procedure.

The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes of which the laser treatment itself will be completed in a few seconds. An extended-wear soft contact lens shield is placed on the eye, which will be in place for 3-4 days.

Your vision will probably be a little blurry at first, so someone will need to drive you home. You should relax for the rest of the day since you may experience some discomfort. This can be alleviated with a simple pain reliever. Some people experience sensitivity to light and watering or swelling of their eyes for a day or two following their procedure.

Eligibility

After a complete eye examination, we will determine if Epi-LASIK is the best option for you. If you are a good candidate, you will be given additional information about the procedure that will allow you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed.
