|
| Q |
Will I need glasses
after LASIK? |
| A |
If thoroughly
evaluated and performed in the right candidate with
the latest technology, patients who have LASIK do not
generally require glasses for most activities. However, patients
who are over the age of forty must wear reading glasses after
LASIK (if both eyes were corrected for clear distance vision).
Some patients will choose "monovision", in which one eye is
corrected for distance and the other eye is corrected for
near. Whether you are a candidate for monovision will be determined
during your consultation with Dr. Anand Shroff. |

|
| Q |
Can I have both eyes
operated upon at the same time? |
| A |
This is what we
recommend. It has been demonstrated in several large, clinical
studies that LASIK results and safety are identical whether
the procedure is performed on both eyes simultaneously versus
one eye at a time. Most patients elect to have both eyes operated
upon the same day out of convenience, less time out of work,
and avoiding imbalance between the two eyes. |

|
|
| Q |
What about the health
of my eyes 20 or 30 years from now? |
| A |
LASIK has been
performed since 1991 and its safety is established. Twenty
year follow-up data are not available. Still, the likelihood
of delayed problems is extremely low. LASIK is a variant of
lamellar surgery, which has been performed for 50 years, and
these patients have not been noted to develop late problems. |

|
|
| Q |
What if I move my eye
during the laser treatment? |
| A |
While the treatment
is performed, you will be asked to look at a light under the
laser. You are required to look steadily at the light throughout
the operation, since this keeps the eye centred under the
laser. However, if you temporarily look away or lose the ability
to look at the fixation light, do not be concerned. The WaveLight
Concerto 500Hz laser is equipped with a special eye tracker
that tracks the eye at 500 times a second throughout the procedure. |

|
| Q |
Any instructions for
people who wear contact lenses? |
| A |
Yes, if you wear
soft contact lenses, we prefer you to take them out 3 (three)
days prior to your initial evaluation in order to obtain an
accurate reading for the topography test. For soft or soft
toric contact lenses, you need to take them out 7 days prior
to the laser procedure. If you wear rigid gas permeable studies
show that 3 or more weeks are necessary for the eye to stabilize.
In these cases, we try to put our patients on soft disposable
lenses for 3 to 4 weeks and then reevaluate after 3 days with
no contact lenses. |

|
| Q |
Do you have any financing
plans? |
| A |
Regarding 'Financing
Options', these work well outside India where there is a control
on Social Security numbers etc and one can control frauds.
Unfortunately in India, with the amount of defaulters, the
Banks do not provide financing plans like they do in the USA
etc. |
| |
|
|
| Q |
Does insurance cover
this procedure? |
| A |
No, insurance
does not cover this procedure as it is considered primarily
cosmetic! |
| |
|
|
| Q |
Can I drive home after
the surgery? |
| A |
No, you will need
a designated driver! For the first couple of hours your eyes
will be sensitive to light and the vision blurred, so you
should wear the special dark glasses that we provide. |
| |
|
|
| Q |
How many times do I
need to visit you for the lasik surgery, in total with the consultation? |
| A |
We see you definitely
the next day of the LASIK procedure. If in Mumbai, we see
you again after 7 to 10 days. if not, the follow up check
is planned according to your conveneinece. In Mumbai at least
4 days (well planned as per our appointment schedule) works. |

|
| Q |
I have a "lazy" eye;
can I still have Lasik to correct myopia? |
| A |
Lazy eye encompasses
a wide range of visual problems and levels of visual acuity.
The only way to know for sure if you are a candidate for LASIK
is to come to the office for a consultation with Dr. Shroff
for a thorough evaluation to determine if LASIK will help
you. Many patients with lazy eye have enjoyed their results
following LASIK because they no longer need glasses or contact
lenses to achieve their best acuity. |

|
| Q |
My number is -6 in
the right eye and -5.5 in the left eye and my age is 24 yrs? |
| A |
More of a reason
for you to check which laser is being used. The Concerto which
we use (only one in India) is the safest as it saves 40% of
cornea when compared to other lasers and hence we can treat
high numbers such as yours successfully. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
I am a little tensed
about the surgery as I have heard about people not being able
to see clearly at night. Will I have any problems with night
vision? |
| A |
This is the reason
why we have invested in a high-end laser like the Concerto
which is devoid of such issues which are still existent in
other lasers. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
Also, I am in front
of the computer because of work and also I like to read a lot.
So lately my number has increased a little. After the surgery,
are there chances of my number increasing? |
| A |
As regards your
profession, we treat most of our patients from the IT sector
as computers create more problems for vision like dry eyes
etc. Dr Anand Shroff, our expert will be guiding you with
the correct way of sitting on the PC and also give you a special
instructions and computer prescription glasses (plus number)
for the long hours on the PC. This is to avoid a shift in
numbers after LASIK and also to avoid eye strain while on
the computers. One does not need to wear this for any other
purpose and also only when sitting for very long hrs on the
PC not for short working.
If any numbers come back there are reasons for them:-
1. You are still growing anatomically and hence must wait
for your physical growth to stabilize, only then will your
numbers stabilize. This is typical for those who are just
18 years. Hence our check up determines your fitness.
2. If you do LASIK on older technology which is not equipped
to treating high numbers
3. Your lifestyle habits like sitting on the computers continuously
for very long hours. For this our Doctor trains you for the
correct method of sitting as well as prescribes a specific
computer number for the long hours so that you do not induce
a small number along the way. Most of our LASIK patients are
from this industry and cannot avoid the long hrs on the PC
but with our advise have managed to keep numbers at bay.
If however a small number does creep in, this can be re treated
again as a short fine tuning treatment or if the patient desires
can use glasses or contact lenses for that work.
In our centre our rate of enhancement or needing to "fine
tune" a treatment is less than 0.4% with our current
technology which is as high as 5- 7 % in most centres worldwide.

|
| Q |
My eyes get a little
dry when I wear my lenses for 10-12 hours not otherwise. Is
it alright if I go ahead with the surgery? |
| A |
Your check up
also involves a quantitative check for "dry eyes"
and we grade it as mild, moderate or severe. If having a score
fitting in severe dry eyes, no laser is recommended since
it will aggravate dryness. then you need to first get the
dry eye condition treated. If mild to moderate, many centers
would either do LASIK and you may end up having dry eyes for
a long time, but in our center we evenhave the option of EpiLASIK
which does not aggravate dryness and is just a modification
in the initial process of LASIK, the laser used to treat the
numbers being the same.

|
| Q |
My son has kerataconus
and I would like to know if he is a candidate for laser eye
surgery. |
| A |
Laser vision correction
is not suggested for patients with keratoconus. However, it
is important to treat this condition to prevent it from progressing.
Our very sensitive topolyzer grades the keratoconus and gives
us the right treatment plan, which may include collagen cross-linking
to prevent further progression, and fitting rigid contact
lenses. For more information on keratoconus, see KERATOCONUS
AND CORNEAL COLLAGEN CROSS-LINKING

|
| Q |
After
the lasik will be able to use eye make up normally?..as in kajal,
eyeshadow etc? |
| A |
Yes, but wait
for the first week when you will need to use eye drops frequently. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
Till how many days
after the lasik should i refrain from doing so? |
| A |
Regular makeup
is allowed from next day, but avoid eye make up until your
second eye check (about 7 days after LASIK) till you meet
the doctor. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
Is there a chance of
my number increasing even after its been corrected by lasik?
If so then how much? |
| A |
Not the way we
work and advise regarding computer use, so if you use the
computers a lot, please speak with Dr Anand Shroff, our LASIK
surgeon, after the procedure for specific instructions as
the only thing that can increase your numbers is computers
used indiscriminately.
Our rate of seeing patients still needing a 'fine tuning'
is less than 0.4% of the time which is as high as 7 to 15%
in some centres. This is not a side effect or complication,
but also needing to rely on your body to heal requires us
in very rare cases to fine tune the procedure (not charged
to you again in the first year). We have not faced any complications
or side effects in our centre as we use the best technology
applied by a very experienced and skilled surgeon. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
Is there a risk of
damage to my eye during the lasik? |
| A |
None, which is
why you are on our list. We do not schedule any patient who
we have the slightest of doubt about. Only when Dr Shroff
has confidence that you will do well, is when he advises LASIK,
which is why you will find him only taking all pre LASIK maps
and data unlike other centres who leave it to juniors or technicians. |

look forward to joining as early as Monday, (with one days
rest on Sunday) |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |

be corrected along with my number with the lasik? |
| A |

it is planned. |
