LASIK FAQ'S and their answers.
Includes queries asked by those travelling from abroad |
 |
|
| |
| Q |
Do you charge differently for overseas patients to local private patients? what percentage of overseas patients do you have? |
| A |
We have the same fees for all patients irrespective of their Nationality. Approximately 5% to 20% are from overseas depending on the months of visit |
| |
|
|
| Q |
With 0 .4% that do not get 20/20 vision, do they get it after the second treatment, are there any patient whose eyes are left damaged or unhealed etc? |
| A |
When I meant 0.4% do not get 20/20, I meant in the first attempt, with re treatment they achieve this as well. None of our patients have had any permanent damage to their eyes. We choose the patients very carefully. If you are not seeing 20/20 before LASIK, then it may not improve. |
| |
|
|
| Q |
I am planning to go to a village after my treatment, will this be ok with the long bumpy journeys, dust and dirt etc? |
| A |
Yes, many do this. As long as you are careful and wear protective sunglasses in dusty areas and use the eye drops as told. Bumps are not good for the retina although it does nothing to the LASIK process done. Those having high myopia or negative numbers, have a longer shaped eye ball and hence have thinner retinal lining. This can detach from the wall if bad bumps. This can happen in absence of having undergone LASIK as this is inside the eye and due to the long shape which we do not change in LASIK. |

|
|
| Q |
What advice do you give re washing eyes and wearing dark glases - how long for? |
| A |
Dark glasses, are not meant for any discomfort with light. It is given as a protective eye wear for first 6 hours so that you do not rub your eyes. After this, you will need to use regular sunglases in the open areas for a week to prevent dust and any foreign bodies from going into the eye and causing you to rub them. Otherwise it is not required.Washing eyes is not a good habit and not advised by the doctors, but you may wash your face with eyes closed the next day after LASIK using your usual facewash or soap. |

What kind of insurance am I covered with if something does go wrong? especially as I am from overseas, what rights do i have? |
| A |
We have similar policies for patients in India and from overseas. Your geographical location does not change our approach to patients and that is called standardized treatment for which we are certified from the JCI- Joint Commission International- USA. You can go through our Patients Rights and Responsibilities Brochure. Personal insurance coverage is what you would have chosen to cover yourself under, this can differ from person to person depending on the slab they choose. |

Yes, it is safe, but depends on how comfortable you are doing this immdeiately after the procedure. If this travel involves out of town travel, then please take time and read our patients experiences especially those travelling from abroad, as most of them travel from Day 2 or 3 of procedure. Means of transport do not matter. Your instructions remain the same whichever city you go ot regarding eye drops and not rubbing your eyes. |

| A |
We work on the uninterrupted power supply system or UPS with the laser. NEVER run the laser without it. Hence, there is no interruption in the surgical procedure even in case of power cut from the external source. |

Dr Anand Shroff has been doing LASIK for past 13 years |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
How many laser eye surgery procedures have you done in the last year? |
| A |
We typically do about 20 to 30 treatments (average) per week. And have been fairly consistent with these figures. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
What percentage of patients have you treated that now have 6/6 or so called ’20-20’ vision? |
| A |
You will appreciate that the queries you have asked relate to statistics (eg. How many/ What percent etc) and one cannot have a single statistic unless they have stopped working! These will keep changing. Hence we do not have a copy of any general answers other than on our FAQ's which we keep updating, but answer specific queries related to you. Our results are excellent with a re treatment rate of less than 0.4%.
Our aim is to achieve 20/20 if not better. We manage this in a single step in over 99.6% patients, in others we do it in two steps. This is called re treatment. The decision to undergo re treatment depends on the doctor and patient. If the cornea is still not fully healed we wait, if healed we treat again, not doing all steps of the first treatment but just re lifting the flap and fine tuning the LASIK.
We do not charge for this in the first year of the treatment. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
What percentage of your patients had side effects for the first 2-3 months post surgery? |
| A |
If you have seen our advantages of using the 'Concerto' you will find that we have listed 'no night vision problems' which is haloes, glares etc, described on the internet as permanent problems. In the healing phase you may experience some of these effects as they are 'subjective descriptions', however, they resolve, usually latest by 3 months.
In fact the Wavelight is the only platform the US FDA states to 'improving night vision'. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
Do you turn away many people? |
| A |
We decline patients for LASIK if they are found unsuitable for the procedure due to :
1. High refraction beyond limits of laser
2. Severe dry eye which would need treatment first
3. Keratoconus or any abnormality found during the eye check which deems them unfit.
You will appreciate that there cannot be a fixed percentage for this. |
| |
|
| |
|
| Q |
What is the worst case scenario and what can be done to help? |
| A |
Our worst case scenario is to mentally prepare yourself that LASIK can happen in two steps. Our aim is to achieve 20/20 if not better. We manage this in a single step in over 99.6% patients, others we do it in two steps. If due to your lifestyle, age, medical reason you have a number in the future, then has to be checked by the doctor to see suitable treatment. |

|
| Q |
Can LASIK be done for anyone who is below 18 years in age? |
| A |
For anyone interested in LASIK - Vision correction who are under the age of 18 years. Yes, LASIK cannot be done, but what we recommend is to get the child in for a routine consultation (eye checkup) with a good Opthamologist which will help in having the eye records over the years, so it will help to know if the numbers have been stable at 18 years.
If we were to visit us directly after turning 18 years, then we would not know what their powers were earlier.
If only they are same & have been stable, then we advise LASIK.
So, important is that they understand the role of regular check ups, at least once every 2 years for us to be able to plan a successful laser treatment.
