Q When should i come for routine checkup next. (I was checked on the next day of procedure and approx. 10 days afterwards.)
A

Anytime before 3 months from the procedure is good.

Q What general precautions should i take in order to prevent any number coming back again? especially cylendrical power?
A

The most important being taking care when on the computers and using the computer glasses prescribed. If not taken this prescription from us, do so on the next visit and until then make sure that you are taking frequent breaks when using the PC.

Q I am only on lubricating eye drops right now (Optive), for how much time should i use these drops.?
A

This is defintiely for 3 months as this is the healing period. After that any artificial tears or lubricating eye drop is to be used as an on and off need as per your symptoms.

Q Whether i can play mild physical sports like Table Tennis now / Use Gym for Exercise now or whether i should wait for some time?
A

Please do so. However, most physical sports need you to use protective eye wear irrespective of having undergone LASIK, so do use that.

Q Is it ok to watch TV or does it contribute the same way as computer in increasing your number? (can u help me with ideal distance)
A

No. So long as you watch TV in a well lit room and a distance of about 10- 12 feet is what is ideal.

Q Can i rub my eyes?
A

Gently, yes. However do refrain from rubbing eyes in general as even in absence of having done LASIK it is known to be a contributing factor to changing the shape of the cornea.

Q Is the sensitivity very uncomfortable?  Does it hurt?  How long does this last for?

A

Your eyes may water or burn. You may feel a poking and pricking sensation for only a few hours after LASIK, between 2 hours to 6 hours. Keep your eyes closed for most of those hours or 'sleep it out'.

Q Do the eyes get more sensitive to light than before - e.g. glare of the sun?  How long does this last for?
A

This is only for the first day and probably very bright sunlight for a week (which happens to all people). Hence you must use good UV-protective sunwear for a few days after LASIK which is any case a good habit for the eyes to prevent UV damage.

Q Do eyes get tired/strained easily after LASIK, e.g. after long hours on computer, or out till late?
A

This happens for most only in the first week or two. Hence our advice is to get back to work, but work with frequent short few second breaks between computer uses.

This feeling of eye strain is sometimes described by patients to be the kind that people get when they have change of spectacle number and they have to get used to a new pair of glasses.

Q What would you say is the maximum recuperation period?  From what I read, it only takes few days to a week/10 days, but it’s best to take care for upto a month.  I guess it depends from person to person.
A

Yes, on an average most people recover after a week to 10 days. Some take longer, even upto about 6 weeks.

Q No rubbing/ knuckling or touching the eyes – for how long? Is it just the 1st week or the first month?
A

No touching the eyes for the first day, we give you a protective eye wear to help you through with that. No vigorous rubbing for a month, but you can gently clean and touch your eyes, rub the corners gently from the next day.

It is very important for one to focus more about the laser technology being used to treat your numbers rather than the pre steps of using the blade or bladeless, unless the center is having some complications in these pre steps, for which one would try to reduce the same by the bladeless method.

Q What happens if we accidentally touch and/or rub the eye(s)?
A

If you just touch and it does not scratch the cornea, its fine, but if your eyes are open and it scratches the cornea, it can disturb the healing process. We advise you to wear the protective wear in the first 6 hours during which time the flap heals. After that it takes a vigorous amount of rubbing to displace what we have done.

Q I understand that hair should be washed the on the day of surgery and then not until after the next 48hrs.  How soon after the surgery can we wash our eyes, face?  I believe a shower can be taken the next day itself?
A

The logic is the same, as shampoo entering the eyes can lead to an urge to rub the eyes hard, hence avoided for 2-3 days. The face may be washed the next day itself.

Q Will this require any examination and possible treatment considering the fact that I am based out of Bangalore and cannot travel to Mumbai frequently ?
A

We treat patients from over 92 countries and most from these places cannot revisit us.

This is the reason we have a high performance laser like to Concerto to get us accuracy in results.

If planned well, you need no more than 4-5 days in Mumbai.

Q What if water gets into the eyes?
A

The water may sting your eyes as it would even otherwise. It is however, not a good idea to purposefully wash your eyes or splash water in your eyes. It is questionable that tap water is free from bacteria. It also washes away your natural tears which protect your eyes.

Q How soon after the surgery can one have a facial?
A

After about 10 to 15 days, keeping in mind to tell them not to rub over the eyes..

Q How soon after the surgery can one start applying mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner, eye cream/mask?  What is the maximum time we would have to wait for?  I need to be sure that I will definitely be able to carry on applying eye makeup etc as normal.  I know that none of these should be worn for at least 2 days prior to LASIK but was not sure what happens thereafter.?
A

You may start all these after about 10 -15 days with make up you were using earlier to be sure that it is not allergic to your eyes..

Q I have nystagmusand use spectacles. However, do not read 20/20 with the glasses. Even though I know that nystagmus cannot be treated, can my vision be improved with LASIK? Have you performed LASIK on nystagmus cases?
A

Yes, we have done LASIK on cases of nystagmus.

You must expect the same amount of vision as you are enjoying today. In adulthood, vision rarely improves unless it was not accurately corrected with glasses. What you may be having is also a bit of 'lazy eye' besides the nystagmus, wherein the eye inspite of correcting the powers does not read 20/20.

Vision is dependent on our optical pathway of the brain, which does not get trained in adulthood to 'read better' as it is stabilized by age 9 or 10 years..

However, all this is still general information, and specific to your case can be answered only with an examination.

Q How long do we have to refrain from the gym?  I understand that swimming and other physical/contact sports must be avoided for at least a month.
A

Yes, swimming is avoidable for about a month, unless after 2 weeks or so you want to swim with swimming goggles on the surface of the pool. This is permissible after your post procedure eye examination with the doctor who will give you clearance for the same.

Gym may be started after 2-3 days where you can use treadmills, exercise equipment, but no sauna or steam till about 15-20 days or so. The eyes may be sensitive to some aerosols or aroma oils.

Q How soon after the surgery can we start watching TV, reading, using PC?
A

Next day itself. However for a week like mentioned earlier, it may be in short spans and moderate work.

Q Can you honestly tell me if this is something I should pursue because I've been miserable with my eyes for years now and I just want to be free from all the eyestrain, the contacts, the glasses. I just don't want to pursue this without some certainty that it has some predictability and will most likely have a positive outcome. Ultimately, I just want an honest, professional answer on whether or not this is for me.
A

If after our detailed check up we find that you are a good candidate for the procedure, you will do very well. However, with just numbers being sent to us to decide via e mail is difficult as you will aprreciate that it will be general responses until the time that we have examined you ourselves. We do not take any chances and do not recommend the procedure to anyone whom we are doubtful of results..

Q What are the chances of developing any of the following side effects (and for how long) post LASIK treatment :-

(I have gone through your website which says there would be no side effects, still I keep meeting people who complain of some form of side effect at the least)

a) Halo effect/ blurred lights (bulbs / direct sunlight / car headlights / faded bright colors)

b) Poor night vision

c) Night glare (especially while driving - from the headlights of the oncoming vehicles)

Q How long do we have to refrain from the gym?  I understand that swimming and other physical/contact sports must be avoided for at least a month.
A

The above exist with the kind of technology used. In the night the pupil expands to let in more light, so if your treatment zone is smaller than the pupil dilation, this issue will exist. Some lasers do not have the capability to treat a large optical zone (which in the Concerto Laser that we use is the largest possible), hence we do not face this issue. You may feel some temporary glare when the layers of the eyes are healing and this will not extend to over 3 months. But the kind you read about on the net is permanent night vision issues which we do not face. For this we also check your pupil diameter in dim light condition

.

Q I am still not able to see very clearly from my eyes. Vision is still slightly hazy. Eyes get dry as well. I live in Doha.
A

Your eyes will continue to heal on a microscopic level, so it is only when you check and compare vision of both eyes, or consciously remind yourself "how well I can see today; or is the left eye or right eye better?" then you may still be perceptive to some slight non crisp vision, which is normal. This settles down in the course of the weeks to come, and is different for everyone, depending on their body healing capacity..
Rest your mind, we see this commonly only in the initial 3 to 4 months, which is why we prepare you stating that it takes 3 months for vision to get crisp and clear. Some heal earlier, some take all 12 weeks for healing.
This settles down in the 3 months post LASIK. All you need to do is follow the instructions of using the lubricating eye drops, Optive, maybe use it more than 4 times a day on hot days, or days when you do more visual work like being on the PC. Driving, or before movies. The atmosphere also being dry contributes to some of the symptoms. This is temporary.

Q Eyes feel heavy sometimes, especially. while watching a movie in the theatre, my eyes don't accept the huge screen and the head starts paining.
A

This maybe due to the eye drops itself. Try not to squeeze your eyes hard, if you taste the eye drops, then this is what you are doing, which causes the mucosal lining of the head, sinuses to get slightly irritated. Take steam inhalation if accompanied with slight headache. This is passing and just needs some time for adjustment.

Q Should I get my eyes checked here in Doha with the eye doctor?
A

One needs to get the exact vision test checked not before 3 months. Till then the cornea gives wrong readings as most check with an 'autorefractometer' for the corneal index which has changed post LASIK.
We will recommend a vision check only when the 3 months are complete, preferably using the traditional method of streak retinoscopy.
Send us the report that comes out of this check up. We have not needed to correct more than 0.4% of our cases, so, just hang in there!
