ReLEx SMILE FAQ's
It is an acronym standing for- Refractive Lenticule Extraction (ReLEx)- is a novel refractive surgery and the most recent, advanced laser vision correction procedure in the world. Many surgeons believe that this All-femto laser vision correction is the technique of the future.

It is an acronym standing for Small Iincision Lenticule Extraction ( SMILE )- is a minimally invasive and innovative procedure. Instead of the laser ablation of the cornea, only minimal amount is lasered to create a lenticule which is then extracted through a keyhole corneal incision (compare 2-4 mm to 20 mm used in LASIK)

Very. The entire idea which conceptualized SMILE is based on how to make laser prcedures that exist today, such as LASIK, even safer and more stable in the long term.
This technique is not only effective and predictable but also provides a safety and stability that is superior to traditional LASIK.
ReLEx SMILE is free from flap related complications possible with other forms of LASIK.
The cornea is Biomechanically more stable after ReLEx SMILE as the incision made on the cornea is 80% smaller than the flap cut made during conventional LASIK, minimising the chances of late corneal thinning and ectasia and also dry eye

Conventional LASIK is a two step procedure. 1st step is creation of a corneal flap using either a mechanical microkeratome or a Femtosecond Laser. 2nd step is corneal ablation using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea by removing and ultra thin layer of the cornea to correct the refractive errors.
Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) technique is a keyhole procedure, it eliminates the need to cut a corneal flap. A Femtosecond laser is used to dissect a lenticule in the corneal stroma without making a flap. The dissected lenticule is than removed from the cornea through a small incision
2-4 mm in size. This procedure is the safest and arguably the best LASIK technique today

Your vision will start improving in a few hours and will be near normal after the first 24 hrs. However, the vision may be slightly hazy in some patients and gets back to normal over the next 2-4 weeks

As the number of corneal nerves affected during the procedure is far lower than that in LASIK, the resulting dry eye symptoms are significantly lesser or near zero in patients undergoing ReLEx SMILE.

Not permanently. Most patients experience some night time glare in the first few weeks during healing. Rarely, glare and haloes may persist for a much longer period.

ReLEx SMILE can correct Myopia and Astigmatism. Hypermetropia ( Plus Power) and Presbyopia can not be corrected with this procedure.

Most of the patients suitable for conventional LASIK can also be treated with ReLEx SMILE. You have to consult our ophthalmologist, Dr Anand Shroff for a detailed examination.

It can be done above 18 yrs up to 40 years. However, eligibility has to be determined through a series of tests.

You should discontinue wearing soft lenses 3-4 days before the evaluation or consultation with our doctor, and same before the procedure (3 weeks for RGP/ semi soft lenses lenses)

Yes, laser procedure is usually done for both eyes at the same time, as we do not ‘enter’ the eye, but just work on the surface; also as both eyes have to recover visually in a binocular way.

Yes. You will be awake during the entire procedure. However, we use anesthetic eye drops and you will feel numbness or little heaviness in your eyes with NO pain sensation during the procedure.

All need to rest for 24 hours post procedure, and the day the laser is performed, you must stay indoors. Then, depending on individual requirement and occupation, a maximum of 2 to 3 days rest is needed for your eyes.

Yes, this is a permanent treatment at present, though research is working in making ReLEx reversible if required, it is still in studies.

As the person`s age increases, ability of the eye to focus on nearby objects decreases. This being age related process, is irreversible and called Presbyopia. Hence everyone above 40 years will need reading glasses even after the laser procedure. But your distance vision will remain corrected.

You can start wearing eye makeup and do beauty parlor treatments after 15 days, and after having checked with our doctor on your post treatment visit. Cosmetic contact lenses can be worn after consultation with your surgeon, but are usually allowed a month later.

No, absolutely not necessary. Routine home light is acceptable. Some may have light sensitivity for a few hours after the procedure, during which time they must shut and rest their eyes. In fact you can start watching TV, reading, and normal routine as soon as you are feeling comfortable.
